Our good habits serve us well (breathing is good and stopping before we cross the road are
just a few examples) but bad habits do have unwanted consequences.
Frequently the unwanted behaviour was once a ‘solution’ to a different problem; for example
a person may feel that they are shy and to overcome this believes that they are more confident
if they drink alcohol. They find themselves drinking more and more frequently. The drinking
was used to solve a problem but then becomes a problem itself.
